Young Persons Support & Leaflets

Young people and mental health

Find Shelf Help in your local library

Hertfordshire County Council has introduced a new scheme to help young people cope with the pressures of life, improve their mental wellbeing and boost their self-esteem.

‘Shelf Help: Reading Well for young people’ is a national scheme which involves health professionals working with libraries to provide 13-18 year-olds with quality assured information, support and advice on a wide range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm, and difficult life pressures, like bullying and exams.

Supported by the Royal College of General Practitioners and Public Health England, and co-created with young people with experience of mental health difficulties, the new Shelf Help recommended reading list of books helps young people to understand and manage their wellbeing and emotional resilience.

The books are available in most libraries in Hertfordshire and are free to borrow.
